What is Title I School Improvement?
States withhold Title I School Improvement funds from regular Title I allocations. The funding is designed to support the State educational agency's state-wide system of technical assistance and for local educational agencies with schools in need of improvement, corrective action or restructuring.
What activities can be supported with School Improvement funding?
On the State level, activities include:
- establishing school support teams
- designating and using distinguished teachers and principals who are chosen from schools that have been especially successful in improving academic achievement
- devising additional approaches to providing assistance, such as through institutions of higher education and educational service agencies or other local consortia, and private providers of scientifically based technical assistance
Section 1116.4.b of Title I describes the activities that are eligible for funding at the district/school level. The State may, with the approval of the local educational agency, directly provide for these activities or arrange for their provision through other entities such as school support teams or educational service agencies. Eligible activities include:
- assistance in identifying and implementing professional development
- implementing instructional strategies and methods of instruction that are created on scientifically based research
- implementing instructional strategies and methods of instruction that have proven effective in addressing the specific instructional issues that caused the school to be identified for school improvement
